Why Luxembourg is often cheaper
Luxembourg generally levies lower excise duties on fuel than surrounding countries. Since taxes form a large part of the pump price, prices there are often lower than in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France. Just like in Belgium, a government-set maximum price applies.
'Often' is not 'always': price differences change due to tax adjustments and market prices. Therefore, check the current prices before adjusting your route.
Planning Luxembourg on your route
If you drive through Belgium via the A4/E411 towards France or via Luxembourg to the south, the country is often right next to or on your route. A stop just across the border, for example around Arlon or towards Thionville, then costs few extra kilometers.
It is important that you arrive with a tank as empty as possible. Therefore, do not unnecessarily fill up in a more expensive country beforehand. Tankmapper takes your fuel level and reserve into account so that you arrive safely at the stop where refueling yields the most.
Crowds and waiting times
- Stations just across the border can be very busy during holiday periods and on Saturdays; include waiting time in your planning.
- Outside border stations, prices within Luxembourg are usually comparable due to the maximum price, so driving far into the country rarely yields much.
- Motorway stations in Luxembourg are often not much more expensive than elsewhere in the country, but check anyway.
Common mistake
Making a large detour to refuel in Luxembourg while your route is far from it. Count the extra fuel and travel time: Tankmapper shows the net saving and extra travel time separately, so you can make a fair assessment.
